Illinois sound-sculptor Innesti has, through his prolific output and beautiful turns of audio phrase, managed to eke out a charming niche as a Bandcamp darling of the ambient set, his self-released mimetic tone poems inhabiting a truly spellbinding clutch of albums. Now Carpe Sonum has joined the many who grok Innesti’s immersive modus operandi, teaming him up with fellow auteur Jacob Newman. Impossible to grasp who does what across the vast sonic compass found here on Spoke of Several, but isn’t that what the best collaborations portend? Each artist’s sensibilities and touches are deftly woven across these ten tracks, and if ever there was a more profound opening than “Within Air”, someone needs to point that out, stat. Channelling the finest drops of Steves Roach and Halpern, the incandescent particle tableaux of Celer and Jonn Serrie, amidst an artful dodging of cliché, Innesti and Newman’s music simply breathes, deeply and harmoniously, in tandem with their own unique circadian rhythms, allowing for a merger of mindstates whose soft machines literally dapple the ear with muted pastels and buffered hues. “Moon Machine” is a lullaby for the nu-age, a walk amongst fields of crystal, the epic feel of which might well be this recording’s native heartbeat. Just when you thought ‘ambient’ music had little else to offer, well, here comes Innesti & Newman to twirl your lobes a thing or two.
